  • Thinking of Resale Contract!

    Hey everyone..

I've been thinking lately about purchasing a small Resale Contract.. However, this is one area of Disney Trip Planning that I know nothing about..

Can you buy a smaller contract at say Old Key West for like 50-70 points or something like that? If so, how much might this run?

Just curious your thoughts on doing something like this!

    Wooohoooo

Yes you can buy small contracts, I've seen them at OKW from 25 points.

When we bought resale we used DVC Resale with Kinn & Jaki. If you check out there website they list all there contacts and you can also fill in there online form & they will keep an eye out for the contract thats right for you.

We had great service using them & I recommended them to Michelle who I know is using them too.

Hope you get what you want, and hear that magic Welcome Home soon xxxx

You can by small contracts on the secondary market but they go fast. Disney has made a change to their policy regarding contracts on the secondary market. I pasted it below.

New Policy Announced for Re-sale Purchases
Disney Vacation Club? has announced a new policy that limits access to certain Member Getaways exchanges for Ownership Interests purchased on the secondary market (also known as the re-sale market).

Under the new policy, Members who purchase from anyone other than Disney Vacation Development, Inc., on or after March 21, 2011, will not be eligible to use those Vacation Points to make reservations within the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Those Vacation Points will instead be valid only for reservations at Disney Vacation Club resorts, as well as for RCI? exchanges, Club Cordial and Club Intrawest.

The affected collections are special Member benefits programs offered by Disney Vacation Development, Inc., and are not part of Members' Ownership Interests. That said, Members who purchased on the secondary market prior to March 21, 2011, may use those Vacation Points for all Member Getaways.

Note that the policy doesn't impact banking, borrowing or transferring Vacation Points. All Members will continue to have the ability make such transactions, regardless of where they purchased their Ownership Interests.

Yes, you can can buy small contracts and you still get all the DVC benefits!!!! The discount on APs are great.

I used DVC Resale with Kinn & Jaki also and they were great.

These are the three resale companies I was watching:

            http://www.resalesdvc.com/
            http://www.dvc-resales.com/
            http://www.dvcbyresale.com/

You can sign up with each and they will send you emails with new DVC resales as they become available. As WildaboutWDW said the small contracts go fast.

I bought a small resale and then added on directly through DVC.
I'm loving my DVC membership and wish I had done it much sooner.
            Have a magical day!!! Jackie

You can get Old Key West contracts for less than $60 per point. However, the smaller contracts fetch a premium. They are typically higher priced, and as a previous poster mentioned, they sell fast.

In addition I think Fidelity gets a ton of DVC resales from when people call Disney and say they don't want their contract anymore. I think Disney refers them to Fidelity.

                http://fidelityresales.com/dvc.php

I bought an OKW contract from there recently and had a good experience.

I would just call any (or all) of those four and let them know what you want and how much you are (reasonably) willing to spend. Let them come back to you when a contract is available at your price. If you are not in a rush this is the best way to get the best price.

Just be sure to read the recent restrictions on resale contracts.

If only there were some sort of media you could use like a podcast where you could get one of the DVC resellers to come on and answer your and other listener questions. That would be great. Too bad nothing like that exists.

I did use Jackie & Kinn, and they're fabulous! I just cleared Disney's right of first refusal (ROFR) on Monday and am waiting on the contracts to arrive. Squeeee!

There has been a recent change in the way one can use resale-purchased DVC points, but Mike I assume your family will plan to use them almost exclusively in WDW or DL, so you won't have any problem. And now that the deadline has passed and the new use rule is in effect, I've noticed the prices for resale contracts have dropped slightly because of the perceived lowering in value.

We've purchased both resale and through Disney, and unless they offered some FABULOUS promotion, I can't see us buying points in the future from Disney again because of the enormous price differential.

OH! Don't buy any less than 100 points, because the LEAST any room runs is 10 points a night and it's hard to get those. For a teacher schedule you're looking at about 14-15 pts/nt during the week and more on the weekends (for the studio room) and you won't have enough points for long stays if you buy less than 100 points.

We bought through Jaki and Kinn also. Great service but I think any of the three posted would be fine.

                    Couple points (pun intended)
                    1. Look at your use year. Study what this means and how it can affect you. I'm not going to try and explain but there is a ton of information out there.

                    2. Look at maintenance fees. You will be paying this yearly and it can mean so much more dollar wise than the intial price of the contract.

Another great resource. A ton of information a very friendly message board.

Good advice! We passed on a cheaper up-front contract with higher maintenance fees and purchased at a property where the maint fees were lower. Bigger savings overall. Thanks for bringing up those two issues.

Be careful on maintenance fee front though it is VERY misleading.

If you go in your normal peak summer time a week at Bay Lake in a Lake View 1 BDRM (biggest inventory) it will be 296 points. The same week at Animal Kingdom would be 226 in standard view 1 BDRM.

                        Fees for those points:

                        BLT: $1151.44
                        AKV: $1132.26

So you pay more up front for BLT and you end up paying a little more in fees for the exact same stay. Always compare home-to-home stays because you are never guaranteed a room outside of the HR, especially in peak seasons.

Well, that is only partailly correct. If you stay at OKW with your BLT points, you pay the lower MF and don't use as many points.

You don't have to stay at your home resort which is why for those who don't have a particular resort that they want to stay at most times, it makes sense to just go with the best deal.

Understood, but no guarantee you can stay else where. And if you read your contract DVC has the right to restrict you to only your home resort and no other DVC property.

Point is-- do not buy points at a resort you are not willing to go to every year or two for the next 40-50 years. And when accounting for cost look beyond the price you pay for points and maintenance fees-- the value is in number of points you get and that return varies based on where you choose to stay.

You are correct on that front. It is certainly stated that you may be restricted to your home resort which is why I would add that Disney fans who want to visit there often should not buy HHI, Vero, or Hawaii. While I think it unlikely for Disney to enforce that restriction, I wouldn't take that chance.
